Well it’s the end of the year. Time to reflect back on favorite dishes from 2015. Let’s start with casual burgers and sandwiches.
My favorite burger of all time was a Guy Fieri burger on the Carnival Breeze cruise ship out of Miami this summer. Maybe it was the Caribbean sunshine on the deck of the cruise ship, maybe it was because I was on vacation, or maybe it was the crispiness of the hamburger patty piled high with pickles and fried onions and cheese and eaten while it was still sizzling from the grill. But during a weeklong cruise, despite lots of other
choices from Indian to sushi to salads I would almost always turn around and head back for a Guy Fieri burger. And the fries were homemade and irregular, more on the soft side like my Mom used to make. Perfect for sopping up the ketchup and absorbing the malt vinegar.
A lot closer to home, The Continental on Third Street South has a burger so popular and delicious that it’s on the lunch and dinner menu of this gorgeous steakhouse at the heart of Old Naples. The chef takes the trimmings from the various types of steak on the menu and grinds them into a unique blend for the burgers. The result is a very flavorful burger patty with crispy bacon, fresh tomato, melted cheese and their own special Mac sauce.
Just across the street at Sea Salt is my favorite sandwich of the year – the Cuban sandwich on the lunch menu. I spent many unhappy years in search of what the fuss was all about with the Cuban sandwich. Too often they were cold, hard and basically inedible. Sea Salt has changed all that. Using real Cuban bread that is white as snow and presses down just enough to be crunchy on the outside yet still soft inside, it’s the perfect holder for the warm pork, sour pickles and gooey gruyere cheese inside. Slather on the mustard and it becomes a fulltime resident on my list of cravings.
