Best of 2015 – The Final Chapter

What better way to start the New Year off than to talk about the best desserts of the past year? I’ll admit that I’m more of a savory lover than sweet. I’d rather eat an appetizer than a dessert so a dessert has to be very special to grab my attention. Unfortunately these days there are too many pre-made desserts on the menus around town. Seems like everyone has a flourless, molten lava chocolate cake with a scoop of ice cream, or a cheesecake, or the crème brulee. My usual question in these situations is “What is made here from scratch?” Usually, (hopefully) there’s at least one thing that the chef makes from scratch in the kitchen. That will always be my choice.

Avocado Cheesecake at FUSE

Avocado Cheesecake at FUSE

Avocado cheesecake at Fuse Global Cuisine is a perfect dessert for those of us who don’t like things too sugary-sweet. Even the burnt caramel topping has a touch of chili to surprise your taste buds. Chef/owner Greg Scarlatos has a menu that is full of surprises like this and interesting combinations of tastes. As a result, Fuse has quietly and steadily built a reputation and audience in the mid-Naples area.

I’m also a fan of anything with pastry. Where can you find a great locally made pie? At The Local of course! This amazing restaurant just keeps getting better as they find more and more local foods to serve. The desserts here are all unusual, everything is made in the kitchen and when there’s a pie on the dessert menu, it’s a must for me with the Local’s flaky pastry and a not-too-sweet fresh fruit filling. There are often very good gluten-free desserts like cookies and cakes as well.

My final star dessert is one you can enjoy in your own home – Norman Love cake-pops. Norman Love cake popsThey are perfectly round pieces of moist, flavorful cake, dipped in icing and conveniently served on a stick. Norman makes these delightful little morsels from the cuttings of the cakes in his Fort Myers bakery and the range of flavors changes daily. They stay fresher longer than cupcakes because the icing completely locks in the moisture. Of course keeping them around very long has never been an issue in my house.
