About 45 minutes outside downtown Tokyo is a suburb known as Bonsai Village.  The homes here sit amongst the most beautiful bonsai gardens, both personal and retail greenhouses.  Street in Bonsai Village

Walking the streets of Bonsai Village is an adventure.  If the garden gates of a home are open, it means visitors are welcome to stop in and look around.  A bonsai being babysat in Bonsai VillageMany of the bonsai are being looked after or “babysat” for their owners, including an ancient collection of bonsai from the Royal family.  Bonsai owners keep their delicate bonsai here for safekeeping and have them delivered to their homes for special occasions.

The beautiful Bonsai Museum is located here and houses the most spectacular collection of bonsai trees that I have ever seen in one place.

Finding the retail gardens and home gardens along the streets is a bit of a scavenger hunt, but chance meetings with the home owners can be delightful.  Monumental bonsaiHanging ancient bonsaiBonsai lover heavenBeautiful bonsaiBonsai for sale

It take a bit of effort to get here, but a visit to Bonsai Village is unforgettable.
