My favorite travel sites right now

I have a lot of sites that I use when I travel. Some are very good, some I just use for ideas and don’t believe everything I read. Some used to be great but have been hijacked by owners or enemies of the owners. Too bad.

Here are some apps on my phone and websites that I use all the time:

Hotel Tonight — great for making hotel reservations in a city that you know at the very last minute (thus the TONIGHT part of the name).

Tripadvisor — lots of ideas here and not just for restaurants and hotels. I find tour companies, what is worth seeing in a place I’m not familiar with, tips and things to avoid.

Opentable — the best app for making (and breaking) restaurant reservations. Opentable will find you a table almost anywhere as long as the restaurant has signed up with this service. If the restaurant isn’t a member, they won’t show up on the available restaurants list. Also, be aware that not all the available times are listed. Some restaurants hold back their most popular reservation times (like 6-8 for example) and you have to call the restaurant directly to make a reservation for those popular times.

I’ve

used Opentable happily for years and it’s especially great when travelling for a few days. It will keep your reservations organized, remind you when a reservation is coming up and allow you to cancel on your phone app if you can’t make it.

UrbanDaddy is a website that I’ve joined recently which has a national and some local variants. I find the emails always fun and entertaining and they often are the first with new information about restaurant and store openings, new products and events
