With 8 legs there should be no fighting over the drumstick!

The latest thing I’ve been seeing on menus is octopus. Really? Yes octopus. Used to be octopus was a creepy little bit you’d see hidden in the sushi chef’s counter, but it’s being embraced these days in all it’s leggy glory. I’ve eaten more octopus in the last six months than in my entire life combined. And it’s no longer ...

Hobnobbing is Encouraged

It’s hard to imagine that there was any type of restaurant missing in Naples but the new HobNob Kitchen & Bar seems to have found a unique niche. Hobnob means to socialize or mingle and that’s just what owner Michael Hernandez is attempting to encourage. He calls his new restaurants a bohemian kind of place, and it reminds me of ...

Naples’ Small Town Market

The Olde Naples Farmers Market has evolved over the past 10 years from a small winter-only market into an all-year long artisan food market. With our short growing season and the limited types of produce that are available locally, the market was always struggling to find authentic farmers to sell their produce. Yet it remained very popular. Every Saturday morning ...

Basically the two movements are exactly as advertised, eating locally grown food, which means less impact on the environment through transporting food over long distances, supporting local farmers (usually organic farmers), ...

More food trends

Okay wrap anything in dough and I’m a fan.  These are empanadas from Florida Cookery in the James Royal Palm Hotel in Miami Beach.  They cook a selection of them every day and they are usually available at breakfast (unless I’ve already gotten there and eaten them all).  Try the alligator empanada.  Best-tasting reptile I’ve ever eaten.

Food Trends

Why Are We All Eating Short Ribs? Ever notice how certain items tend to spread like wildfire through restaurants? Just like clothing and music, food trends make certain items suddenly show up on everyone’s menu. I’ve noticed this recently with short ribs. Suddenly every restaurant is featuring boneless short ribs as an entrée or even an appetizer (over risotto at ...
